Attack on Titan is among the most popular anime worldwide, with an average sales of 52,067 across nine volumes, with 468,603 as of August 2016. It is a Japanese dark fantasy anime television series adapted from the manga of the same name by Hajime Isayama. The show debuted on April 7, 2013, and has released four seasons.
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the remains of humanity live behind walls protecting them from giant humanoid Titans. It follows the journey of Eren Jaeger, a teenager who seeks revenge on enormous creatures known as Titans that killed his mother and destroyed his town. Along with him is his group of friends who have devoted their lives to fighting while investigating Titan’s origin and history.
In 2022, it became the first-ever non-English language series to earn the World’s Most In-Demand TV Show title by winning the award of “Most in-demand TV series in the world 2021” in the Global TV Demand Awards.
With its high demand, we can expect the seasons to be found on Netflix, but unfortunately for Netflix users, only the first season of the anime is available on the streaming platform. That is also only in the United States and Canada. Even that has been subjected to multiple difficulties in the past. The last time the season faced the threat of removal was in February 2021.
With Netflix only supporting the first 25 episodes only, the best platform to watch anime in the United States is through the subscription of Hulu and AdultSwim.
The show’s latest and previous episodes are readily available in countries other than the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. Regions that have access to all the latest updates, including Netflix Japan
Netflix Malaysia, Netflix Philippines, Netflix Singapore, and Netflix Thailand.
In South Korea, you can only season 1, 5, and 6, while Netflix Hong Kong only has access to seasons 5 and 6. There are many regions where only a particular season is available for streaming. For example, Netflix France only has seasons 3 and 4, Netflix Spain and Portugal only have seasons 3.
The reason behind the lack of availability can be the ban of the series in many regions. In 2015 the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China banned the distribution of Attack on Titan. In Malaysia, the titan bodies wear tights due to their censorship laws. The government of the Russian Federation also prohibited the distribution of Attack on Titan in July 2021.
The rights of Anime streaming are pretty challenging to have, and achieving licenses for anime is highly fragmented, which means you either have to have a lot of subscriptions or shows just aren’t available full stop.
Hopefully, the time will come when people all across the globe will be able to enjoy the whole show.
