On Saturday, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) held a virtual vote for the best films and performances of 2021. The group’s Twitter account was used to announce the awards all through the day. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress, won by Simon Rex (“Red Rocket”) and Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) respectively.

Other notable winners included Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” which finished second in several categories, and the music documentary “Summer of Soul.” Last year’s Best Picture winner was Steve McQueen’s omnibus film “Small Axe,” with eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Nomadland” coming in second. Carey Mulligan was named Best Actress for her performance in “Promising Young Woman.” Chadwick Boseman was named Best Actor for his performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress won by Glynn Turman for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Youn-Jung Youn for “Minari,” respectively. Mel Brooks, as previously announced, received the group’s lifetime achievement award.

Winner: tie between Vincent Lindon, “Titane” and Kodi Smit-McPhee, “The Power of the Dog.”

BEST ANIMATION
Winner: “Flee”

BEST SCREENPLAY
Winner: Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe “Drive My Car.”

BEST DOCUMENTARY
Winner: “Summer of Soul”

BEST ACTRESS
Winner: Penelope Cruz, “Parallel Mothers”

BEST ACTOR
