Italy’s data protection authority has generally notified the Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok regarding an alleged breach of existing European Union rules to protect user privacy, the watchdog announced Monday.

TikTok had informed its users in recent weeks that it was going to provide targeted advertising to them from July 13th, without asking consent for utilizing data that’s stored on their devices, according to the Italian watchdog.

While altering its privacy policy, TikTok claimed it was acting in the valid interests of the company and its partners, as per the Italian regulator. But the watchdog said, “such a legal basis was not consistent with EU privacy rules.”

“We strive to build a personalised experience for our community, and at the same time we are committed to respecting the privacy of our users … and operating in compliance with all relevant regulations,” a TikTok spokesperson said.

“While our evaluation of the Italian Data Protection Agency’s recent notice is still ongoing, we cannot comment further,” the spokesperson announced in a statement.
The Italian watchdog said that it was reserving the right to inflict unspecified restrictions if TikTok, which has witnessed rapid growth worldwide, especially among teenagers, does not revoke its announced policy changes.

The watchdog has also notified Ireland’s Data Protection Commission regarding TikTok’s policy alleged breaches of EU data rules. The Irish body is the top EU regulator for TikTok and other leading internet companies because of the location of their regional headquarters in Ireland.
