Kengan Ashura is an original net animation anime series originally prepared for Netflix. The show made its debut on the streaming outlet on July 31, 2019. The show is based on a Japanese manga series written by Yabako Sandrovich and illustrated by Daromeon. It was directed by Seiji Kishi and penned by Makoto Uezu and Gō Zappa.

The show has broadcasted two seasons since it arrived in 2019. The first 12-episodes were premiered in July 2019 on Netflix, and the second 12-episodes premiered in October 2019. The show has been in the news regarding its plans, and after almost two and a half years, we finally have an update that Kengan Ashura will be returning with a brand new season shortly.

The story tells the aftermath of the Edo period of Japan. Since the economic growth, gladiator arenas have existed in various forms worldwide. In these halls, wealthy business owners and vendors hire gladiators to battle in unarmed combat where the winner takes all, called Kengan matches. The plot circles around a fighter in his late 20s named Tokita “Ashura” Ohma. Because of his remarkable skills, he is chosen by the Nogi group to be its new representative, with Kazuo Yamashita as his protector.

Ashura’s remarkable capability to crush his opponents catches the attention of big business proprietors, leading to his inclusion in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament under the invitation of Hideki. The most prominent CEOs maintain this tournament in Japan, and the winner earns the seat of Kengan Association chairman, a position which carries immense power and prestige. Ohma pushes his strength as the contest unfolds while laboring with his mysterious past coming back to torment him. Kazuo struggles with handling Ohma and figuring out the true intent of why he was requested to this tournament.

The show has so far broadcasted two seasons with twenty-four episodes. The confirmation of their season came on March 23, 2022, through the Netflix Japan Anime Twitter account that confirmed that Kengan Ashura would return!

Since there are no updates on its production process, the wait for another run will be a long one. Netflix subscribers are expected to wait for at least 2024. If we consider them to work effectively in a shorter time, then hopefully, we will get to see the season sometime in late 2023. For further updates, stay tuned.
