A team of physicists at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Physics and Astronomy used mathematical calculations to show that quantum interactions throughout interstellar space should occur. In their paper published in the journal Physical Review D, the team explains its statistics and the possibility of external creatures trying to communicate with us using that signature.

A few years ago, scientists investigated the possibility of using quantum communication as the safest way to transmit messages. Previous research has shown that receiving such notifications is almost impossible without acceptance. In this new experiment, researchers wondered if similar forms of communication could exist in the interstellar universe. To find out, they used calculations that described the movement of X-rays across the instrument, such as those that travel between stars. They are looking to see if their statistics could indicate the degree of inconsistency during such a trip.

With quantum communication, engineers are dealing with quantum particles that lose some or all of their unique features as they encounter obstacles in their path — found very weak. Such events are known as decoherence, and engineers working to build quantum networks were devising ways to overcome the problem. Previous studies have shown that the space between stars is immaculate. But is it clean enough in quantum communication? Statistics show that this is true. The atmosphere is so pure that X-ray photons can travel for hundreds of thousands of years without being disturbed, including interference with gravity. They noted that optical and microwave belts would work equally well.

The researchers noted that because quantum communication is possible throughout the galaxy if other intelligent creatures exist in the Milky Way, they may already be trying to communicate with us using such technology. We may begin to look for them. They also suggest that quantum teleportation throughout interstellar space should occur.
