The Last Kingdom is a British historical fiction television series that made its debut in 2015 on BBC America BBC Two before appearing on Netflix in 2018. The historical drama was developed by Stephen Butchard and produced by Ben Murphy. The show was introduced for the very first time on October 10, 2015, and has been steadily making its way to its fifth season is scheduled to return on Netflix on March 9, 2022.

The official update of season 5 came on July 7, 2020, when it was revealed that the show would be renewed for a fifth and final season. The premises of the drama is based on the novel series written by Bernard Cornwell titled, The Saxon Stories. Before being launched on Netflix for its season 3, the show was previously co-produced by the British broadcaster BBC.

While announcing the arrival of the last but not the least installment, the series executive producer, Nigel Marchant, shared, “We are really proud of The Last Kingdom, which continues to entertain audiences all over the world. We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so we are thrilled to be bringing it back for a fifth and final season on Netflix. With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”

The plot of the series is set in the year 866 when the Great Heathen Army’s arrival in Britain is about to redefine the relationship between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons.

Netflix released the synopsis of the final season and it browses, ‘Uhtred realizes his destiny is more than just Bebbanburg: it is tied to the future of England itself. Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.’

The Last season left fans with many questions, which forced them to eagerly wait for the next installment. At the end of season 4, we wondered whether Uhtred’s first wife, Mildred, will return to the storyline or if we’ll get to see what happened to her. We also saw Aethelflaed falling out with her lover Uhtred over the Mercian throne. And with Uhtred’s goal of taking back Bebbanburg, we are sure that fans will be introduced to new foes in the coming season.

Along with old cast members that consist of Alexander Dreymon, David Dawson, Emily Cox, Tobias Santelmann, Adrian Bower, Thomas W. Gabrielsson, and many more, we will also be introduced to a new character named Aelfweard, who is played by Ewan Horrocks, who according to the reports will play a recurring role in the final season of the drama.
