‘The Woman King’ is the ideal movie for Black History Month because it teaches viewers about a historical event and honours all elements of Black existence, including its high and low points.
It isn’t surprising that audiences were largely attracted to the stories depicted in “The Woman King” because it was the first time a popular motion picture had truly captured the legacies of African history. The kingdom of Dahomey, a prosperous nation in Western Africa that colonists overran in the late 18th century, inspired the movie. The movie’s protagonist is Nansica, a well-known female ruler and commander of a female army whose strong leadership helps to protect their kingdom from enslavement.

Nanisca is portrayed by the incredible actress Viola Davis, who recently earned her EGOT title. The best way to characterize Nanisca is as a strong leader who will stop at nothing to get revenge on her enemies. She is the leader of the Agojie, a squad of female fighters, and she makes it her mission to use all available methods to liberate her nation.
