In the 95th Academy Awards, the movie received a nomination for Best International Feature Film. In fact, with its nomination, it has made history by becoming the first Irish film ever to receive a nomination in this category, and it is also has been nominated for Oscar. Filmmaker Colm Bairéad wrote and directed the drama The Quiet Girl. Additionally, it is based on Claire Keegan’s short story Foster. The story follows a nine-year-old girl sent away from her dysfunctional family to spend the summer living with her mother’s cousin and her husband in rural Ireland in 1981. She has her first taste of freedom and a warm home there. The young Girl quickly discovers a painful truth about her foster parents.
The skillful cast includes Andrew Bennett, Carrie Crowley, Catherine Clinch, Kate Nic Chonaonaigh and Michael Patric; on a sad note, the movie is not streaming on Netflix, as it requires certain licensing rights to launch into OTT platforms. The Quiet Girl was initially scheduled to begin playing in a few theaters in California and Los Angeles on December 16, 2022, but this option is no longer available. Even worse, no one is currently offering this movie for streaming. There is a possibility that it will eventually appear on Hulu, though. In any case, Super LTD, a Neon subsidiary, is the distributor. Many of Neon’s movies go to the streaming service after being released in theaters, due to the studio’s output agreement with Hulu. But bear in mind that nothing is definite at this point. The good news is that you can buy or rent VOD services and have a watch.
